Search for inexpensive, accessible test for Ebola

MIC Professor Daniel Engel, PhD and structural biologist Zygmunt S. Derewenda, PhD search for inexpensive, accessible test for Ebola.

“Derewenda and Engel recently made a breakthrough in Ebola research when they identified the structure of a part of the virus important in the reproduction process — a protein inside the nucleocapsid, the core of the virus containing all of its genetic material.

That discovery could hold the key to coming up with a detection system more suited to doctors in remote locations. “This is a question of time,” Derewenda said. “There’s a need for fast, cheap detection systems.””
